南十字座是全天88个星座中最小的星座之一，面积仅68平方度，由四颗明亮的恒星构成十字形图案
（也是最好连线的星座之一）
它与半人马座相邻，曾是古代阿拉伯天文学家与欧洲航海者定位南天极的重要参考，将南十字座的长轴向南延伸约四倍距离，即可大致确定南天极位置
