该星云因为在摄影后外观与郁金香相似而得名，距离地球约6000光年。从地球上看郁金香星云可看到它在天球上接近第一个被认为是黑洞的微类星体天鹅座X-1。天鹅座X-1是本条目影像中在垂直方向接近星云右方的两颗星中较亮者
