IC 342本该是北天最壮观的星系之一，它几乎正面朝向我们，视直径约19.77角分，接近满月的三分之二。可惜它正好躲在银河盘面的尘埃后面，星光被削弱得厉害，于是有了隐藏星系这个名字。
